Answer

How many reviews does a local business need?

Enough to be comparable to whoever appears beside you, and recent enough to look like a going concern.

Enough to stand comparison with whoever appears beside you, refreshed continuously. There is no absolute threshold — the judgement is relative and local — and a steady trickle of recent reviews outperforms a large old collection.

The question is usually asked as though a threshold exists, and the honest answer is that the judgement is comparative and local. A customer looking at three businesses side by side is not assessing whether you have crossed a number. They are noticing which of you looks established, active and plausible, and doing it quickly. Whatever number makes you unremarkable in that glance is the number you need.

That makes the useful measurement your competitors' counts in your area rather than any published benchmark. In some categories and towns the businesses appearing beside you will have a handful each; in others they will have hundreds. Being the one with almost none is the problem, and being average is nearly all of the benefit — the returns fall away quickly above the point where you no longer look thin.

Recency does more work than volume and is where most businesses lose without noticing. A large collection whose newest entry is from two years ago suggests a business that was busy once. A smaller collection with something from last month suggests one that is working now. Since reviews accumulate and then age, a business that ran a review push and stopped ends up in the first category automatically, which is why a slow steady habit outperforms a campaign.

The content of the reviews matters more than the star average once the average is respectable. A review naming the specific work, the specific problem and the specific outcome is far more persuasive than a line of praise, and it also does something the average cannot: it tells a customer whether the business has done their particular job before. Encouraging specificity is as simple as asking a question — what did we do and how did it go — rather than requesting a review.

The way reviews are requested determines both volume and honesty. Asking every customer at the same point, promptly after the work, produces the most representative set. Asking only the customers you expect to be happy produces a distorted set that eventually reads as too good, and platforms have their own rules about incentives and selective solicitation that make the shortcut risky as well as misleading. The reliable sequence is a satisfaction check first and the review request only where the answer is positive — which is not selection so much as not asking people to publish a complaint before you have had a chance to fix it.

One thing worth ignoring: services offering to supply reviews. Beyond being against every major platform's terms and generally unlawful to present as genuine, they produce a pattern that is visible to customers reading them — reviews that praise without describing anything. The cost of removal, suppression or exposure is far larger than the benefit, and the business is left having to start again with less credibility than it had.

Nobody counts your reviews; they glance at yours, glance at the one below you, and form an impression in about a second.

Does a perfect rating help or hurt?

A flawless record across a large number of reviews reads as implausible to many people, and a small number of moderate reviews with good responses often reads as more trustworthy than uniform praise. The genuinely valuable thing is a visible pattern of handling problems well, which cannot exist without a few problems being visible.

Should we respond to every review?

Respond to the negative ones always and the positive ones selectively. A response to criticism is read by future customers far more often than by the person who wrote it, and it is one of the few places a business can demonstrate how it behaves when something goes wrong. Templated thanks under every positive review adds little and makes the responses to criticism look equally automatic.
